Ivar Grydeland & Ingar Zach

Born in Trondheim 1976, acoustic/electric guitarist and banjoist Ivar Grydeland studied at the Norwegian Academy of music from 1996-2000, and from 2001 – 2003. His mixture of fingerpicking technique, various types of bows, metal, propellers, and electronic devices creates a personal and flexible sound. Grydeland runs the Norwegian label for improvised music SOFA with fellow musician Ingar Zach. His current working ensembles include HISS (with keyboardist Pat Thomas, bassist Tonny Kluften, and percussionist Ingar Zach, which released the CD ZAHIR on Italian label Rossbin in spring 2003; Wazahugy (with violinist/electronicist Phil Wachsmann, violist/electronicist Charlotte Hug, and Ingar Zach; the Ivar Grydeland/Tonny Kluften/Paul Lovens trio; and the Zach/Grydeland duo.

Born in 1971 in Oslo, Ingar Zach is one of Norway’s leading drummers/improvisers. Known for the wide range of sounds in his drum kit, he uses percussion in a very dynamic but still energetic way. He has been dedicated to improvised music and folk music for the last five years, and is now touring and recording with his regular ensembles and other projects in Europe and the USA. He founded the Norwegian label for improvised music, SOFA, together with guitar player Ivar Grydeland in May 2000. His current working ensembles include TRI-DIM (with saxophonist Håkon Kornstad and guitarist David Stackenäs; the Ingar Zach/Ivar Grydeland duo; No Spaghetti Edition, an improvising ensemble consisting of Norwegian and international improvisers; the Derek Bailey/Ingar Zach duo; and HISS (see above). He has also worked with Jim O’Rourke, Barry Guy, Evan Parker, Axel Dörner, Kevin Drumm, Thomas Lehn, Johan Berthling, Raymond Strid, Fred Lonberg-Holm, Susie Ibarra, Jaap Blonk, Mats Gustafsson, Annette Krebs, Andrea Neumann, Phil Minton, Michel Doneda, and Giuseppe Ielasi.
